My grandmother, Elsie Reaven, died from breast cancer at 72 on May 13th, 1993. Elsie was an amazing and inspirational woman. Mother of 4, grandmother to 5, 1st woman elected citywide to the Akron, OH City Council, avid bridge player, M.A. student at SF State at 68, college teacher, political and social justice advocate, and a favorite at the Stonestown Loehmann’s store for the treats she would bring the staff when shopping.

In 2000, I saw the ads for the then Avon 3-Day walk to fight Breast Cancer in SF. My younger sister and I did that first walk together, in memory of our grandmother, and it was one of the most profound and moving experiences of my life. Not just to remember Elsie and to help in the fight against this awful disease, but to get outside my comfort zone and to join others in doing something bigger than myself.

Since that first walk in SF I have done the 3-Day five more times, twice more in SF (2002 and with my mom in 2008), and once each in New York (2004), Chicago (2007), and Boston (2010 with MWH).

But also since that first walk in 2000, my sister’s grandmother-in-law passed away from breast cancer, and just recently my mom’s aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer (and so far is doing as well as can be expected). This fight is not over!

This year I am going to do 2 walks for the 1st time; in the sweltering July heat in Boston with the amazing Men With Heart team, and with my mom again in SF with the equally awesome Warming Hut Hotties team.

The walking is not the hard part for me; fundraising is the only thing that has stopped me from doing 2 walks (or more) before.
Please help me achieve my goal of walking 120 miles to fight breast cancer with your generous donation!

We lost Elsie because the lump in her breast went undiagnosed by her primary physician until it was too late.

I walk so that no one will be misdiagnosed like she was ever again.

I walk because my grandmother would walk in these events if she were with us today.

I walk because I can.
