No. 5: February 2010 Newsletter

Feel The Heat!
Chilly winter weather notwithstanding, Men With Heart is heating up for the coming year. In addition to our two major walks (see below), we are putting money, resources, and time into other exciting initiatives. Read on for details.

If you haven’t walked with us in a few years — or if you’ve never laced up a pair of sneakers with us — now may be the time to get engaged. The need is great and your presence can make a huge impact on the events.

If you’re unsure about making the commitment, dip in a toe by attending or volunteering at some of our other events. All the info you need can be found below.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.

MWH Planning a Strong Showing at the 2010 Avon Walk
Men With Heart will have two teams participating in the upcoming Avon 2-Day walk (May 15-16) – an energized team of men walking and a committed group of guys crewing at a rest stop. We are pleased to announce that veteran team member Tim Kenney will captain the Avon team. As it currently stands, about 10 guys have committed to walking the Avon walk. We’d like to sign up another 10 in order to have a strong presence on the walk and to make the kind of beneficial impact that has become Men With Heart’s trademark. Won’t you consider joining the team? For more info, contact Tim at timkenney@comcast.net.

Men With Heart has created facebook.jpga fan page on Facebook and we are looking to gain as many fans as possible. The fan page is more interactive than the website and will offer more frequent content changes. To become a fan of Men With Heart is simple, just go to www.facebook.com/menwithheart and click on “Become a Fan.” It’s that easy!

Saks Fifth Avenue – Fathers of Boston Promotion to Benefit MWH
saks_fifth_ave.jpgTo celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Father’s Day, Saks Fifth Avenue is honoring fathers in the Boston area to benefit Men With Heart. The Fathers Day Honors recognize the unsung heroes among us. We’re looking for local role model dads who are making a positive impact, whether it’s through their generosity, their style, or their dedication to their families and communities.

Saks and Men With Heart will reach out for nominations and choose the winners. The awards will be presented at a fundraiser to be held at Saks Fifth Avenue in Boston to benefit Men With Heart. Five percent of all sales related to Fathers of Boston — both at the event and through the weekend — will be donated to Men With Heart.

In addition to the fabulous fund raising, this event represents a tremendous opportunity to celebrate and promote Men With Heart. Our group will be promoted in various Saks materials, including the Saks national Father’s Day catalog; the local Saks web page with a link to menwithheart.org; a dedicated email in June to Saks Boston customers; in the Father’s Day window displays; all in-store signage; event materials; and press releases. Information about the program, Men With Heart, and how to nominate a worthy father can be found at www.saks.com/fathersday

Captain’s Update on the 2010 Komen 3-Day Walk
3day_for_the_cure.jpgThe Boston Komen 3-Day is still more than five months away, but the activity around this year’s team is already revving up. We have 21 guys committed to walk in this year’s Komen 3-Day walk (July 23-25). That’s an incredible number to have this early in the year, but we have higher goals. If you or anybody else you know is interested in being part of something very special, please consider joining this year’s Komen team.

Our team stands out among the predominantly women walkers. We wear yellow shirts; we carry backpacks filled with supplies (chocolates, band-aids, vaseline, sunscreen, etc); we sing songs to our fellow walkers; we cheer and provide support every step of the way. At the end of each day, we line up to cheer every walker in until the very last walker finishes. These small acts symbolize our effort to show women that men care about this fight.

If you are interested in joining the team or if you have questions about the walk, please contact Scott Walters, this year’s team captain, at scott@menwithheart.org. Please forward this newsletter along to folks you think might be interested in our efforts.

Men With Heart Reaches Out in Two New Areas
Over the past year MWH has moved forward on two initiatives that have us reaching into the local hospital and breast cancer support community. We welcome your help and advice as we undertake these efforts.

  • MWH Care Kit – Individual team members are working with hospitals and breast support centers to distribute what we call MWH Care Kits. The kit consists of an excellent book called “Breast Cancer Husband,” our new MWH brochures, and customized brochure holders. The book was written by Marc Silver, a MWH team member and accomplished author. Our goals are to distribute the books to those who need them and to generate interest in the team. If you know of any hospitals, oncology centers, or support groups that would like a Care Kit, please contact Gordon at gordon@menwithheart.org.
  • Sponsor Caregiver Support Groups – We are working with two different groups at the Lahey Clinic and Faulkner Hospital to fund and help promote support groups targeted at caregivers. This is a major initiative to provide needed support to those who help care for breast cancer patients.

With these new initiatives, we have more need than ever to raise funds. If you would like to make a donation to MWH, please visit our website and make a donation through our secure PayPal account page www.menwithheart.org/donate. Thank you!!!
