Dave’s Cancer Walk Page

Dave BoltonOn the weekend of May 17-18, I will be taking part in my first ever Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Over the course of two days, I shall be walking 39.3 miles in the company of hundreds of women and men, pounding the streets and suburbs of Boston. With a rucksack filled with helpful stuff on my back.

Last year, my wife Daniella spent an enormous amount of time not only fundraising for the walk, but also taking part in the annual event. As she limped her way to the finish line – dressed in a lot of pink – she looked at me and told me that I would be joining her in 2014, before pointing to a group of guys that had helped her over the two days. Naturally, I agreed…and one year later, the time has come to make good on the promise.

DaniellaAccording to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common form of the disease in women, and it is estimated that one in eight will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. Every year, approximately 220,000 women in the United States are told that they have it, with around 40,000 losing the battle. The stark reality of this condition is that it takes a life every 14 minutes.

We likely all know somebody who has either been diagnosed with, is fighting, or has succumbed to breast cancer. That is enough for me to want to play my part in raising money for and awareness of the ways we can improve the odds of surviving. But I am pulling on my walking boots for one more reason.

DaveBoltonandFather-250pxEarlier this year, I lost my father to cancer. After being diagnosed with the esophageal version of the disease, he underwent weeks of treatment before a successful operation to remove the tumor in August 2013. Over the months that followed, he made a slow recovery before being told on January 2nd that the cancer had returned and was inoperable. He passed away on February 1st, 2014.

That makes my desire to beat this disease even more personal. Last year, I was a bystander, cheering on the hundreds of participants who endured 39.3 miles of walking the streets of Boston to make a difference and who, ultimately, were rewarded with knowing that a weekend of blisters is nothing to complain about.

This year, I will be an active member of the event and have been accepted by Men With Heart to walk as part of their team. Which is where the rucksack comes in.

With that in mind, I am asking for financial donations, all of which will go to funding research and improving the rates of survival among those suffering with breast cancer. Any money that you can spare to help in the fight will be appreciated, and I ask that you make a contribution by clicking on the buttons/link below.

It may seem clichéd but together we can make a difference. Thank You.
