This May, I will take part in my 13th consecutive Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, hiking 40 miles over two days to raise awareness and funds in the fight.

In some respects, the battle has been discouraging. Statistics remain stark: this year, 40,000 women will die from the disease. Breast cancer takes another life every 14 minutes. A woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes. An estimated three million women are living with breast cancer; one million of them don’t even know it.

Jack's13thAvonWalk-cropped2Yet progress is being made. Gene mapping is identifying women at high risk. Treatments are becoming more refined. Detection technology is improving. And prevention research continues to provide clues to the origin of the disease.

On a personal level, my wife and step-mother have enjoyed another year as cancer survivors. A close family friend and another relative have completed treatment and are on the road to normalcy.

In sum, it’s certainly worth lacing up the sneakers for another year. I hope you will join me once again and support me in this effort.

Thanks for all you have done in the prior years. Together, this battle can be won.

Jack
